Backbone Mountain Youth Center
SP Arch, Inc. was hired by MS Engineers and the Maryland Department of General Services to design a recreation building for the detention to be used primarily during inclement weather. Due to the cold, harsh, mountain winters the building foundations were deeper than what is normal for Maryland. The challenges were the limited budget, accessibility and egress given the sloping site and the requirement to connect to the existing building. We provided design for grading and landscape to create an accessible entrance and egress access. The success of the project was accredited to coordinating with and managing the electrical and mechanical engineers, working with the department’s architect, the warden and the design reviewers.
